Sachsenhausen
For many interested in history, a visit to Sachsenhausen is at the top of the list of must-sees in Berlin. Sachsenhausen wasn’t just a concentration camp, but it also worked as a head quarters for the SS and training camp for the whole system of concentration camps. Thousands of Jews were sent here after the so-called ‘Crystal Night’, and tens of thousands Soviet prisoners died in the camp a few years later.
However, it wasn’t just the Nazis that used Sachsenhausen, the Communists also used the camp as a concentration camp for their political enemies five years after the Nazis had lost and the Soviet Union had taken control over East Berlin.
Madame Tussauds Berlin
The popular wax museum isn’t just in London. Berlin has its own Madame Tussauds museum with many of today’s stars. A visit to Madame Tussauds is fun for both children and adults. Even the summer has its rainy days. On those days, and for those who aren’t easily scared, Berlin Dungeon is the perfect place to seek cover from the rain. With more than 700 years of shocking European and German history, Berlin Dungeon is an incredibly exciting experience. Children must be 9 years old to get ind, but for families with older children it is a frightening, but still fun way to learn about history from the Middle Ages until the 20th century. Berlin Dungeon has several different shows, a raft ride and much much more. It’s perhaps not for those easily scared, but a must for those who love horror and history!
