Must-See Musicals in London in 2017

Adding a musical or show to your London trip is like adding whipped cream to a cake, a bit decadent, but so worth it. That said it can be difficult to choose what to see when you are only in town for a weekend or perhaps a week.

The good news is that London has a wide range of amazing shows and musicals that will take your breath away and leave you feeling so decadently spoiled. The thing is that it can make it harder to decide what to see. Do you go for the hottest new show? The one with the most awards? Or the one based on the book you loved?

Having been lucky enough to get to see quite a few of these we’d definitely suggest that you start with one of these five: Lion King, Les Miserables, Wicked, Thriller & Phantom of the Opera.

We firmly believe that you just can’t go wrong with the longest running, multiple award-winning hit shows.

These are not only the safe bet – they are the ones that are guaranteed to knock your socks off and leave you with memories for a lifetime!

Disney’s The Lion King is a family-friendly favorite and enjoyed by audiences of all ages! With music by Elton John, The Lion King is one of the most stunning musicals ever made, both in and outside of London.

The Lion King has world-premiere in London in October 1999 and continues into its 18th year of booking at the Lyceum Theatre London. The popular musical has been seen by more than 85 million people around the world, with productions playing on every continent except Antarctica!

The incredible lyrics and music are by Tim Rice and Elton John. Julie Taymor directs this musical version of Disney’s insanely popular movie the Lion King. She actually was the first woman to win a Tony Award for ’Best Director of a Musical’.

The hard hitting facts, strong script, glorious composition, compelling acts, magnificent sets and soulful score makes this musical the longest and strongest musical of West End.

Les Misérables is produced by Cameron Mackintosh. Claude-Michel Schönberg is the book co-writer and the composer of both Les Misérables and Miss Saigon, all in collaboration with Alain Boublil.

The musical has cast its spell over audiences of all ages across the world for a decade, and it continues to be a record-breaking hit at London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre, where it has become the 10th longest-running West End musical of all time.

Wicked – The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz – is the incredible story about an unlikely but profound friendship between two young women who first meet as sorcery students at Shiz University: the blonde and very popular Glinda and a misunderstood green girl named Elphaba.

Wicked is based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, has music and lyrics by multi-Grammy and Academy Award winner Stephen Schwartz, and was adapted to the stage by Winnie Holzman. The production is directed by Joe Mantello.
